Do I need a bartending certificate to get a bartending job?
This is probably the most frequently asked question I get about bartending schools. Bartending schools market
themselves heavily on two things: the bartending certificate and job placement assistance. Neither are legit, in
most cases.
You will NEVER need a bartending certificate to find a bartending job, and in some cases, it will do you
more harm than good if you bring it to a job interview.
Responsible Alcohol Service certification, such as TIPs, is a must in today's industry, but this is NOT the same
as a bartender certificate. Don't let a bartending school fool you into believing one is as good as the other.
In my Master's Bartending Course, I provide a comprehensive introduction to responsible alcohol service. As a
former TIPs instructor, I know how important responsible service is, and the dangers presented to your guests,
you and the bar owner when a staff is not trained properly.
After taking my Master Bartending Course, sign up for a TIPs course in your area or take a class online. Links
are provided in the course. A Certificate of Achievement is complimentary with my Master Bartending Course,
but it is not necessary to secure a bartending gig.
XYZ Bartending School promised me Free Job Placement. Is this for real?
Unfortunately, no. This is an empty promise used to get you to commit to paying their RIDICULOUS tuition. Do
you know why most bartending schools offer "free refresher courses?" Because they know their job placement
is a scam tactic, and that by the time they find a job for you, you're going to need to take the course all over
again.
Bartending schools normally advertise a great big list featuring all the hot clubs that hire their bartenders. Let
me ask you this question, and please answer honestly--
If you ran a booming high-volume nightclub, would you hire a bartender fresh out of bartending school?
Getting into a nightclub as a bartender is hard, even for an experienced bartender. It takes time. You can do it,
but you'll need to start at a restaurant, pub, hotel, etc. and polish your skills a bit before venturing into clubs.
Trust me, the jobs that bartending schools promise are the ones you wouldn't apply to on your own.
My job hunting guide provides insider secrets on how to find a bartending job on your own, and comes free as
a bonus with my Master Bartending Course. I also provide a professional resume template and cover letter
template to send out to potential employers!
Frequently Asked Questions
How many drinks do I really need to know? My local bartending school
says it's about 100 drinks.
First, let me answer you question, and then respond to your statement.
I've been bartending for almost 15 years now. In that time, I've made the same 40 drinks over and over again..
You will never need to know hundreds of drinks, no matter where you work. Study the most popular, learn how
to make them well, and you will be fine.
As far as a bartending school teaching students hundreds of drinks, I have to wonder how they have time to
teach students what they really need to know--how to move behind a bar, brand awareness, salesmanship,
up-selling, responsible service, guest satisfaction, inventory, hot change a keg, soda box and CO2 tank, etc.
You will learn all of these things in my Master Bartending Course, and I'll even throw in a speed sheet of the
most popular 100 drinks for free. Check it out here.
What payment options are available for the Master Bartending Course?
